Bringing Energy Tools Down to Earth

There is a common issue you may come up against when telling people about energy tools – eye rolls, skepticism, and fear. When I first heard about energy tools, I thought they sounded so out there and unbelievable. And yet after starting to use them I never looked back and here I am now raving about them! They literally made such an immediate impact on my dissociation and overwhelming emotions that I had to respect the power they held.

For many, energy tools will feel really alien to anything they’ve done before and if there’s one thing we know about trauma, it’s that it can make us fearful of trusting others or trying new things. So, we have to find ways to share this information with people we care about so they can get the help and resources that they need and deserve.

Over years of teaching energy tools to clients and professionals, I’ve found that naming the doubts and fears when introducing energy tools really helps. Paradoxically it actually makes those who are skeptical more open to trying them. When I first presented energy therapy in jail in the US I used to roll my eyes and say “You guys aren’t going to believe this”. And just naming out loud that it might come across a bit ‘out there’ seemed to help break the ice. It wasn’t long before they were giving it a go. In spite of lingering doubts, it was always just as effective and really helpful for them. That’s the beauty of energy tools – they seem to work irrespective of whether people believe in them or understand exactly how they work.

So how would I introduce energy tools in a down-to-earth way to someone? Let’s picture talking to someone who’s never heard of them, maybe a new therapy client or a friend. I might explain them by saying something like “Energy tools tap into your body’s energy and electrical pathways, your acupuncture system, targeting specific points on your body that correspond to your physical and emotional system. Think of it as a rapid relaxation technique, it’s really fast at calming us down. Some techniques involve holding or tapping different points on your head, face, or body which might feel weird to begin with. They’re worth knowing about because they really work and you can use them by yourself, even if they do seem a little strange.” Here’s a video where I talk more about these introductory conversations:

I also find a lot of people have also been more receptive to trying energy tools when connecting to the idea of how we instinctively are drawn to do things with a baby or small animal to calm that little being down – we rock them, or pet them, or hold them, or talk them for a walk, for example. I explain that it’s important that we do things for ourselves that calm our bodies too. We too need and deserve that TLC, no matter our age. In fact, our bodies carry lots of younger parts of us with memories from the past. By connecting with and calming the body we can can listen to the important things they are trying to tell us.

You’ll see how I talk about this in the video below and how I introduce the Head Heart Holding Practice. If you check out my YouTube practice videos, you’ll notice I tend to do the techniques alongside my clients so they feel supported in the process and can have a clear visual of what we are doing.

The freedom that comes with these tools, by being so quick and effective in calming your whole system down, is something everyone deserves to know about. Try these conversations out yourself with people in your life who maybe wouldn’t be your usual candidates for energy practices but who you imagine would benefit from them. Let me know how you get on! Was there any pushback and what helped make breakthroughs?

If anyone is interested to find out more, I have a free ‘Learn to Use Meridian Tapping’ resource, and do let them know that if they are left with any questions, they can reach out to me on social media (Instagram, Facebook) – I never tire of talking about this and there is no such thing as a stupid question.
